If you’re headed into downtown Fernandina Beach anytime soon, be sure to stop by the Fernandina Beach Branch Library to see its newest addition: Common Ground. This inviting outdoor space – right outside the library’s main entrance – is the perfect spot to catch up with friends, use the library Wifi, sip coffee, or just take in the ambiance of our charming downtown.
Common Ground was created as part of Nassau County Public Library’s five-year plan established in 2020, which has already accomplished such things as upgrading the library’s exterior, creating butterfly gardens on the southside of the building, and asking the community what else it wanted.
“The idea for Common Ground emerged from a 2022 community survey, where residents expressed a desire for an outdoor space to enjoy,” explains Nassau County Public Library Director Julie Cannavino. “We took a walk around the building and agreed the 4th Street entrance and corner with Alachua Street was looking a bit neglected.”
Friends of the Library (FOL), an organization dedicated to supporting the Fernandina Beach Branch Library, was inspired by the survey feedback and stepped up to create an outdoor space to enhance the front entrance and serve as an oasis for visitors to enjoy. For those unfamiliar, Friends of the Library is an all-volunteer organization whose mission is to promote literacy and lifelong learning in our community through programs, advocacy, and fundraising.
“The library administration partnered with us to form a dedicated Grounds Committee, which I was pleased to chair,” explains Margaret Bellucci, FOL board member and treasurer. “Under the guidance of industrial and graphic designer Eric Bartelt, the team spent countless hours refining the design, securing necessary approvals, sourcing materials, and fundraising.”
With the vision of Common Ground bringing the community together, FOL invited the community to invest in the space as well. “We launched the ‘Buy A Brick’ campaign in fall of 2024. Donors could purchase a brick, personalize it with their names or in honor of a loved one, and these stones became the pavement in the new space,” says Margaret.
The community enthusiastically embraced the effort, and thanks to the generosity of the many brick purchasers, the FOL – in conjunction with the City of Fernandina Beach and the Nassau County Public Library – made Common Ground a reality. “One of the most delightful surprises in the process was the donation of a bronze book, which is installed in Common Ground with an inspiring message,” adds Margaret. “You’ll have to stop by to see it yourself!”
After two years of planning and installation, Common Ground opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in late November last year. “We have been very happy to see Common Ground being used heavily, whether by students on their way home from school, adults meeting for coffee or waiting to join a meeting in the library, or various people simply enjoying a quiet moment on 4th Street,” Margaret confirms.
Today, the inviting outdoor space is indeed a tranquil setting for relaxation, reading, and connection. It has quickly become a truly community hub. The library hopes that Common Ground will live up to its name, serving as a place where people from diverse backgrounds can come together, find common ground, and foster a sense of belonging.
