The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary this season, reflecting on its early years and the Amelia Island community’s dedication to creating a world-class chamber music festival.
In 2001, Eileen Shannon Moore, a Centre Street shop owner, invited a group of friends and community leaders to meet Christopher Rex, the principal cellist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, to hear his ideas and learn about his dream of establishing an Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. Rex treated the first volunteers to concerts in Moore’s shop.
The first years were challenging – finding musicians, venues, volunteers, and promoting an art form that was new to many people. The early musicians who came to the island were enchanted with the small community that welcomed them. They stayed with families and enjoyed the beach and historic district. They delivered world-class chamber music, and early fundraising efforts paid off.
“We all pitched in, entertaining, financing, chauffeuring, and feeding the musicians,” shares Anne Coonrod, a board member from the first year. “We fell in love with them, and they fell in love with the community. We started with one week of events, and now we have 14 performances throughout the year.”
A UNIQUE AND DYNAMIC CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
The festival in its early years was not just any festival; it took advantage of a variety of unique venues, from luxurious The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island to the historic Palace Saloon. One memorable candlelit event, staged at historic Fort Clinch, featured a string quartet and ballads from the Civil War.
A generous supporter of the arts on Amelia Island, including Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, ARIAS, and Amelia Island Opera, Paul Bosland recently shared his love of music and why he thinks supporting these organizations is so important. “I have always loved music – played in my high school orchestra and bands. I sang in high school chorus, university chapel choir, and, more recently, the Amelia Plantation Chapel choir. We are blessed in our community to have so many opportunities to enjoy world-class performances so close to home.”
The tradition of hosting events at various venues continues. This year’s performances will be held at some of Amelia’s beautiful churches, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, the Omni Amelia Island Resort, the Amelia River Club, and the historic Nassau County Courthouse.
William Ransom joined the festival team as Artistic Director after the passing of Rex in 2022, carrying on the tradition of bringing the finest musicians in the world to Northeast Florida. A pianist, artistic director, master teacher, editor, and judge for international competitions, Ransom regularly appears in recital as a soloist with orchestras around the world.
Robyn Marie Lamp, executive director of the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, is a professionally trained classical operatic soprano who brings her extensive background in the arts and administration to the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. Based in Florida, she has enjoyed a successful career performing in venues across the country. Lamp is a co-founder of Amelia Opera, an island-based opera company offering performances and community outreach.
Throughout the festival’s 25-year history, a diverse range of internationally acclaimed artists have performed. They include Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Hilary Hahn, Pinchas Zukerman, Joshua Bell, Chick Corea, Bela Fleck, Chris Thile, Emanuel Ax, Valentina Lisitsa, and Wynton Marsalis. Headline performers have included artists such as Grammy-winning violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, bluegrass performer Ricky Skaggs, and the renowned soprano Renee Fleming. This year’s featured performer will be Emmylou Harris.
MASTERCLASSES AND “MEET THE MUSICIANS” EVENTS
The season opened on October 12 with the Silver Soirée, a celebration of the festival’s first 25 years. The second floor of the Story & Songs Center for Arts & Culture came alive with music, memories, and anticipation for the upcoming season. Guests mingled and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres while learning about this year’s exciting variety of performances.
