The Mustard Seed Cafe

The Mustard Seed is always bustling with happy customers; they have a great vibe going on! Chef Devon Mitchell was at the helm that day, and we were eager to try some of his offerings. We started out with a fruit smoothie, made with strawberries, mangos, and raspberries. I like that we could choose whatever we wanted in our smoothie, and the café offers lots of add-ins like wheat germ and bee pollen if you want to up its nutritional level. Ours was thick and fruity, not too sweet, and a good start for lunch.
Next Devon brought us Clam Chowder, which was a special that day. The chowder was chock full of clams and lots of herbs, including oregano, parsley, dill, thyme, tarragon, and more—a flavorful twist on a traditional chowder!
Sherry ordered Turkey & Brie, a smoked turkey sandwich served on Ciabatta bread with mayonnaise and brie, along with mixed greens tossed in a peach vinaigrette. The sandwich was hot, the bread crusty and fresh, the brie rich and melty, and it was served with homemade cole slaw. Healthy and delicious!
I ordered Brown Rice Stir Fry, a vegan and gluten-free dish that is my favorite menu offering. The stir fry is made with organic onions, cabbage, red bell peppers, carrots, spinach, and mushrooms seasoned with Asian vinaigrette, sesame oil, and Bragg’s Liquid Aminos. This is a beautiful and healthy dish, and if you want more than vegetables, you can order it with tofu, tempeh, chicken, mahi, or salmon.
For dessert, we shared a gluten-free Key Lime Tart, and it was amazing. Sherry especially loved the lighter-style crust and the tartness of the creamy filling. The Mustard Seed has a new pastry chef named Ellie, who is baking lots of fresh and healthy sweets these days. My sweet tooth is very happy about that!
Another thing I love about The Mustard Seed and Nassau Health Foods is the way the store is set up. I can always find exactly what I want. They have a huge selection of freshly made take-away items like salads, wraps, and sides, like Hummus and Southwest Quinoa. They also have an array of organic produce, free range chicken, turkey, and wild-caught fish. Their breakfast menu features Build-Your-Own Omelettes, Breakfast Burritos, and Sweetwater Organic Coffee. On Saturday mornings, try their Paleo Pancakes, Quiche of the Day, or a Breakfast Pita that’s loaded with shaved turkey and fried egg, and lots of cheese.
The Mustard Seed Café is open Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Breakfast is served 8 to 11 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday breakfast hours are extended to 1 p.m. Visit them at 833 TJ Courson Road or at www.nassauhealthfoods.net, or call them at (904) 277-3158.
