Ackerman Cancer Center opened 20 years ago with a state-of-the-art facility at Baptist Medical Center Nassau on Amelia Island, where residents can receive cancer treatment and diagnostic testing, with proton therapy available at Ackerman Cancer Center’s Jacksonville location. After opening their proton therapy unit in April 2015, more than 400 patients have received this cutting-edge treatment. Proton therapy provides patients with fewer side effects, allowing them to enjoy their hobbies and live a healthier life during and after treatment. “There are many pieces to the cancer puzzle,” says Scot Ackerman, MD, Ackerman’s Medical Director. “Each patient is unique, and the strength of our practice is our ability to put all the pieces of your puzzle together to put you on the path to wellness.” As the world’s only private, physician-owned proton therapy center, Ackerman Cancer Center gets to know you and your unique needs in order to create a customized treatment plan. Patients benefit from personalized care, including comprehensive support services provided by oncology social workers, oncology wellness specialists, and financial counselors. They also have access to support programs such as the Pink Ribbon Ladies and Men Helping Men. “I never felt like a number, always felt like a person getting their full attention for my comfort and concerns,” says Artie Lynnworth, a cancer survivor and Amelia Island resident.
