Amelia Islander

Omni Jax Hosts Matthew Evacuees

Nov 07, 2016 02:00AM
Seventeen Amelia Island Plantation residents, along with three dogs and two birds enjoyed a respite at Omni Jacksonville after evacuating Amelia Island during Hurricane Matthew. They joined many others from other beach communities, along with their dogs, fish, cats, and squirrels.

The people and animals got along marvelously and were well treated and fed by an amazing staff and manager who also "camped out" at the Omni during the storm. The Amelia folks occupied their time by playing marathon bridge, others played Eucher and Mah Jong, and many watched football games. Children had the run of the ballrooms on the second floor and pet owners walked their dogs in the basement where the hotel provided Astro Turf for their needs.

Everyone was worried and anxious to return to their homes but they made the best of their time and became good friends on the Omni party ship, “Matthew.”
