W/dropcaps]hen Dr. John McClane, Jr. opened his optometry practice in 1948, little did he know he was creating a family business that would continue nearly 70 years. In 1957, Dr. McClane built the office at its present location at 6 South 14th Street, and an adjoining home was built in 1964. In 1979, his son, Dr. John McClane III, joined the practice, followed by his nephews, Drs. Steve and Tony Stubits. “The home was turned into the office that is now Coastal Vision Center in 1987,” says Dr. Tony Stubits. “The building was expanded, and today we have 5,700 square feet with five examination rooms, ten employees, three doctors, and a full optical shop.” After a merger with Southeast Eye Associates in 2011 and the addition of J. Russell Stackhouse, M.D. in 2014, Coastal Vision Center now offers complete eye care, from eyeglass frame repair to the latest in laser-assisted cataract surgery and LASIK procedures. “We stay current with the latest equipment and techniques,” says Dr. Stubits. “Eyes are complicated and interesting organs. When we examine the eyes, we can find medical issues that a patient may not be aware of, like diabetes, which can cause blindness.” “We are committed to educating our patients and providing personalized eye care services,” says Dr. Stubits. “Our patients are like family to us—some of them have been coming here for 40 years. When we help them improve their vision, we improve the quality of their lives.” For more information, call (904)261-5741 or visit
