Slider's Seaside Grill

Sliders Seaside Grill is Fernandina Beach’s only oceanfront tiki bar, located steps from the beach on South Fletcher Ave. It has deep roots on Amelia Island, opening in 1945 as a traditional American roadhouse. The restaurant has changed and grown throughout the years, and it is one of my favorite beachfront eateries. I recently invited my friend Cindy to join me at Sliders for a late lunch. I had heard that Sliders had updated their menu, and I was eager to see what new items Chef Brennan Pickren was creating in the kitchen. We began our meal with some bar drinks. Although I’m usually a wine drinker, Sliders is known for their creative craft cocktails, so I always like to try a new drink when I visit the restaurant. Cindy ordered a Sliders Slammer, the restaurant’s signature cocktail, containing gin, vodka, Triple Sec, light rum, dark rum, and a secret blend of fruit juices. Wow, that cocktail really packs a punch! I went a little lighter and ordered a virgin Strawberry Colada. It was out of this world, a cross between a strawberry daiquiri and a pina colada, with all those tropical pineapple and coconut flavors, layered beautifully in an icy glass. While we were sipping our drinks, we visited with Sliders’ General Manager Cason Zylinski, and Director of Catering Nigel Teare. The two talked about their new offerings, including specialty tacos, low country boil, lobster mac and cheese, and new burger varieties. We began our lunch with Sliders’ most popular appetizer, Crab Cake with house-made Remoulade Sauce. The crab cake is so delicate and perfectly cooked, and loaded with lots of lump crab. It’s served atop a bed of arugula, with spicy, creamy Remoulade, and a grilled lemon, which I squeezed over the crab cake. So delicious! Then Cason suggested we sample Fried Avocado, which is normally served in a taco with black bean salsa and hummus, served to us by Chef William. This dish is called a “Hippie Chic Taco,” but our version was served without the taco shell so we could really experience the deep-fried avocado. Making deep-fried avocados is no easy feat, so I was very impressed with how perfectly they came out – super crispy on the outside, and creamy and melt-y on the inside. Cindy and I then shared Sliders’ Chimi Churri Steak, created and served by Chef Brennan. This was an amazing dish of melt-in-your-mouth top sirloin steak, marinated in zesty chimi churri sauce and served medium rare with grilled plantains. I loved the combination of savory flavors from the beef and sauce paired with the sweetness of the tender plantains. And speaking of sweetness, who wouldn’t love a decadent dessert after all our wonderful menu choices! Chef Brennan brought us Death by Chocolate, a chocolate chip brownie with chocolate sauce, crumbled chocolate Heath bar, ice cream, whipped cream, strawberries, and mint. I loved this dessert, and I can picture myself coming by Sliders again soon, just to order dessert. Completely renovated with a Caribbean theme in 2003, Sliders Seaside Grill offers top-quality food and service.
