When Theresa Duncan and her father, Todd, decided to go into business together, they wanted to fill a need in the community and do something they were passionate about. It didn’t take long for them to realize that Amelia Island needed a toy store. “My dad wasn’t quite ready to retire, nor did he want to grow up,” laughs Theresa. “We both love toys, and we both have a strong opinion about how important educational toys are in developing social and motor skills.” She named the store Villa Villekulla after Pippi Longstocking’s house. Pippi was Theresa’s favorite childhood character, and she wanted to pay homage to the Fernandina Beach house where the Pippi Longstocking movie was filmed. Theresa’s 10-year-old son, Adrian, also plays an integral role in the store. “Adrian is our director of toy development,” says Theresa. “He is in charge of testing the toys and setting up our displays.” And if you think Villa Villekulla is only for kids, you haven’t spent much time in the store. “Our toys are for ‘kids’ from age 1 to 100,” says Theresa. “There’s nothing that brings me more joy than watching a 60-year-old man laughing and playing with our marble runs!” Villa Villekulla features quality educational, open-ended, outdoor, and eco-friendly toys and games for every kid and budget. “There are so many quality toys, but we try to stock toys that are affordable, with the best play value,” says Theresa. The store is located at 5 So. 2nd Street. For more information, call (904) 432-8291 or visit
