“Transitions” at Amelia Musical Playhouse

Feb 16, 2015 02:00AM
Amelia Musical Playhouse presents two one-act plays depicting seniors who are coping with transitions in their lives on February 20 and 21 at 7:30 a.m. Directed by Jan Cote-Merow, the two original one act plays portray life as a series of endings and beginnings.

The first act is the scene “Last Rites” from the play “Hitchhike” by award winning playwright, Joanna Piucci. A kindly driver is speaking with his elderly male passenger as they travel across a long bridge, and it soon becomes evident that this is more than an ordinary taxi ride. In the course of the ride, the passenger learns about acceptance and letting go before reaching his final destination. The second act of Transitions is “We Interrupt This Program” by local playwright, Jane McAdams. This is the story of Lilly, a recent widow, active volunteer and devoted grandmother who copes with her recent loss by embracing different opportunities that present themselves.

Director Jan Cote-Merow, having reads both of these plays, saw an immediate connection between the two stories and, with the authors’ permission, combined them into the program Transitions. “From beginning to end, our lives are constantly interrupted with unexpected change,” says Cote-Merow. Cast includes Char Bachman, Garett Davis, Jeff Goldberg, Don Harley, Catherine Henry, Jeff McDowell, Michael Miller, Loran Tyler, and Buffy Wells.

Half of all ticket sales will go to the Council On Aging to support their many outreach programs that benefit seniors in Nassau County. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 for students and can be purchased online at or by calling (904) 277-3455.
