When Dr. Gerald Koss decided to purchase Dr. Jay Crump’s optometry business, he was all about keeping it local. From his employees and labs to his charitable giving, Dr. Koss does all his business with community in mind. “We are completely focused on customer service and quality care,” says Dr. Koss. “Everything we do at Amelia Eye is for our patients and our community.” Dr. Koss knew at a young age that he wanted to be an optometrist. “I started wearing glasses when I was nine years old. I was fascinated with the process of the eye exam,” remembers Dr. Koss. Since July, Dr. Koss has brought new optical technology to Fernandina Beach, including an O.C.T., which is a machine that allows observation of all ten layers of the retina for better diagnosis and management of retinal disorders and glaucoma. It is similar to an M.R.I. for the eye. As a licensed optometrist, Dr. Koss provides exams, diagnoses, and treatments of all disorders that affect the eye or vision. Dr. Koss was also invited to do a residency in ocular disease at Omni Eye Services of Atlanta, which focused his training on glaucoma and dry eye syndrome. With this background, he is able to recognize and manage a range of health issues, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye, cataracts, diabetes, and hypertension.
