Early McCall has been hanging out with trees for as long as he can remember. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a Master’s degree in forestry, with an emphasis on forest genetics. McCall worked for 36 years in Rayonier’s regeneration program before retiring to pursue his new passion in arboriculture. He became an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist in 2010 and opened McCall Tree Health and Consulting LLC in 2012.

With his background in both forestry and arboriculture, McCall is one the few individuals in the area who can identify specific tree problems and offer solutions other than removal. “Sometimes I’m asked to come out to see a client’s favorite tree. They might be afraid that the tree is dying, or maybe it’s become unsafe,” says McCall. “I offer them advice and possible treatments to improve tree health. It might have disease, boring insects; or it may just need nutrition or judicious pruning. The safety of trees is a high priority, so if testing shows decay in a tree is too extensive, removal may be recommended.”

McCall assists with new construction projects by helping the property owner decide which trees should be retained and recommending measures to protect them during construction. Younger trees that receive appropriate care and pruning require less corrective pruning as they age. “Trees enhance the beauty of your landscape,” says McCall. “They cool your environment and increase the value of your property.” For more information, call (904) 557-3951 or visit
