Cummelia Holds Spring Event

Mar 31, 2014 02:00AM
Cummelia was started in 2007 by four couples who were interested in promoting and connecting Amelia Island residents to the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in Jacksonville. This developed into a group that organized an outreach program targeting Nassau County grade school students, raising funds for bus trips to tour the Cummer Museum for a day. Several of the founding members of Cummelia were docents already trained to lead Jacksonville students around the galleries. Each year Cummelia raises enough money (approximately $8,000) to bus 800 3rd grade students to the Cummer. While there, the children experience a tour of some of the galleries with age appropriate discussions of paintings, a tour of the gardens plus they participate in a hands on art project giving them real time studio experience.

The children and teachers love this program and Cummelia is proud to provide this opportunity for so many. In addition to fund raising, Cummelia provides programs to its members and guests from October to May. An example is their volunteer day in May, Very Special Arts, (VSA) when the group car pools to the Cummer and helps students with disabilities and special needs complete art projects at art stops all around the Museum. This is a huge undertaking for the Cummer, and Cummelia is only a small part of the over 2,000 volunteers that give of their time and talents.

This Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. Cummelia will hold their Annual Meeting and Spring Event with speaker Maggie Reynolds from the Cummer Museum, who will give a power point presentation on the emergence of post WWII Art, entitled “Design, Desire & Destruction: Art in the Atomic Age.” The presentation will be held at Amelia Island Plantation Guild & Gallery at the Omni Spa and Shops and will include wine and hors d’oeuvres. The cost is $10 for non-members, free for Cummelia members. Space is limited and participants are requested to register by Wednesday by calling Kim Pomar at (904) 899-6038.
