Pirates Playground Opening This Spring

Mar 24, 2014 07:17AM
Play is a very important part of a child’s social and physical development, and in our community, there are many children with disabilities who have to sit on the sidelines and watch other children play.  8 Flags Playscapes, Inc. is a non-profit located in Fernandina Beach that is tackling this issue head on by building the first playground in the community for all children. Pirates Playground will help make Northeast Florida become a more inclusive place, allowing people of all abilities to play side by side with friends and family.

On March 29, First Coast Heel-n-Wheel will be held at Main Beach Skate Park, a two mile wheel and walk to raise money for the Pirate Playground. After the awards ceremony, Pirate Playground and the City of Fernandina Beach will host the first “Slide into Spring Music and Craft Beer Festival” at Main Beach on Amelia Island, from noon to 9 p.m., featuring live music, kids zone, games, food, and craft beer tasting. “This project is a community effort,” says Aaron Morgan, Chairperson for the 8 Flags Playscape project. “The playground should be completed by May 3, with the help of our many volunteers.” For more information visit www.8flagsplayscapes.org, or www.slideintospring.com, or call (904) 335-7253.
