Nassau County Bird Club Heads to the Greenway

Nov 01, 2013 02:00AM
The Nassau County Bird Club will hold a field trip to Egan’s Creek Greenway on Saturday, November 16 at 8 a.m. Located behind the Atlantic Recreation Center, 2500 Atlantic Avenue, the Greenway is across the street from Fort Clinch State Park. The Greenway is on the Great Florida Birding trail, a dynamic landscape featuring salt marsh, hardwood hammock, a reclaimed freshwater swamp, and coastal hammock.

Last month the birders saw over 25 species of birds at Huguenot Park and Little Talbot Island, including a white morph of Reddish Egret H, an unusual find. “ This is not a separate species, says Carol Wyatt, Bird Club member. “It displays the same fishing habits of the Reddish as dashing around and extending its wings to cast a shadow and to stupefy its prey! I would say it is unusual to see this white morph in North Florida. I have seen it twice at Huguenot, in October of 1999 and September of 2008.”

Participants should meet behind the rec center. There is no need to reserve your space, just show up and learn a lot about your feathered friends from people in the know. Do, however Bring binoculars, a field guide if you have one, bug juice, sunscreen, rain gear, and water. For more information call Wyatt at (904) 261-9272 or email her at [email protected]
