The Desire Cup Brings Gators and Dawgs Together

Oct 25, 2013 02:00AM
Desire Street Ministries is proud to host The Desire Cup golf tournament, which has been created around the storied rivalry between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Florida Gators in true Ryder Cup fashion. It is a way for fans from Georgia and Florida to connect and compete on the golf course during the weekend of the Georgia vs. Florida football game. Players associate with the team of their choice and the winning team takes home the coveted Desire Cup trophy. In just a short time, the Desire Cup has become a source of pride and legacy for both school’s fans. Proceeds from the tournament help support Desire Street Ministries. In 2013, Desire Street will be using the funds raised to help rebuild its New Orleans facility which was damaged in Hurricane Katrina and subsequently demolished. The Bulldog faithful will take on Gator fans in match play, Ryder Cup scoring on Amelia Island's famed Oak Marsh Golf Course. Celebrity players include Danny Wuerffel, Emmitt Smith, Musa Smith, Chris DiMarco, Shane Matthews, Kevin Butler, John Lastinger, Marcus Stroug, Travis McGriff, Terrence Barber, Judd Davis, and Lindsay Scott. Retired Georgia Coach Vince Dooley will be on hand Friday morning at breakfast to give a charge to the golfers. All events on Thursday and Friday are at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. Kickoff Dinner Gala (including Sponsors' Reception) and Friday Breakfast will be in the Magnolia Room. Golf will be played on the Oak Marsh Golf Course. Saturday's pre-game tailgate party will be held at a prime location across from the baseball field inside the EverBank Field Sports Complex area. For more information visit www.thedesirecup.com.
