On November 9, Micah's Place will celebrate its tenth year anniversary with a 1920s - themed event held at the Omni-Amelia Island Plantation. The event wraps up October's full month of activities recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness month, and will raise both money and awareness of a critical community resource. Micah's Place provides a safe confidential shelter, a 24-hour toll-free hotline, counseling, legal advocacy and support groups for victims.
Celebrity guest speaker is Victor Rivas Rivers, a veteran film star, former NFL Miami Dolphins player, a childhood survivor of domestic violence, and best-selling author. A masterful storyteller whose topics are as diverse as his background, Victor Rivas Rivers is deeply passionate about combating stereotypes and cultural prejudice. Tickets for the events are $125, and include a cocktail reception, dinner, and silent auction. Festivities begin at 5 p.m.
Micah’s Place started in 1999; in 2003 a 16-bed emergency shelter opened and a 24-hour toll-free hotline was activated. Current programs include outreach, community education including educational programs in local high and middle schools. All services and programs are at no cost to victims and organizations.
