Have you ever thought you were the only one who was interested in a particular subject or sport and wondered why you can never find someone who shares your enthusiasm? That’s how Meetup began. Meetup is the world's largest network of local groups, making it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 9,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities.

Meetup's mission is to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference. But that doesn’t mean that your Meetup group cannot be purely social, too. Getting together for companionship and friendship is also a big part of Meetup.

Do you like gourmet food? Kayaking? Contra dancing? Playing the ukulele? There are local Meetup groups for all of these hobbies, and most are only a short drive from Amelia Island. If you want to start up your own Meetup group, their web site makes it easy, and plans start at around $12 per month, which can be easily paid by asking your members for a dollar or two each time you meet. Meetup does all the advertising and Meetup members receive emails letting them know when the next Meetup is, and where. For more information visit www.meetup.com.
