Amelia Bike Trail Celebration on May 11

May 08, 2013 02:00AM
On Tuesday, April 23, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) had a review to see if they could accept the new Amelia Island off-road six mile trail. The inspection went well! Orange barrels and trail road closed signs were removed on April 24 and 25. Many have already been enjoying the opportunity to walk, run or bicycle safely on the new off-road trail.

The Friends of Amelia Island Trail has planned a Trail Opening Celebration for Saturday morning, May 11th. The purpose of this celebration event is to celebrate the opening of this new trail and to recognize the team which includes citizens, businesses and non-profit groups all working with city, county, state, and federal officials to help make this new trail happen.

The group wants to encourage this same type of teamwork to continue making trail improvements on Amelia Island in order to reach their goal of Amelia Island becoming the best and safest place to walk, run, and bicycle in all of Florida.

Join the celebration on Saturday, May 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. at Peters Point Park, to hear from and encourage this team. Following the celebration bicyclists, runners, and walkers will be led by respective clubs on a ride, run, or walk on the new trail. Peters Point Park is the trail head on the ocean at the north end, and Amelia Island State Park is the trail head on the Nassau River at the south end.
