Amelia Island has been blessed with some pretty warm weather so far this season, and what better reason to get out and enjoy our natural world during the holidays. If you’re sick of shopping malls and traffic jams, why not join a naturalist and explore Amelia Island’s natural wonders? The kids have a pretty long school vacation this year, so when they get bored with their Christmas toys, take them on a trip to the Amelia Island Nature Center, located at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Spa & Shops.

The Amelia Island Nature Center has a fully stocked retail shop (in case you still have some gift buying to do) complete with binoculars and field guides to fulfill all your exploring needs. You may visit with the Center’s locally rescued critters, talk to a naturalist, rent a fishing pole, or sign up for one of the Nature Center’s many tours.

These include bike trips, hiking excursions, beach combing, kayaking, Segway tours, and even trips to the Okefenokee Swamp in GA. A special activity called the Junior Naturalist Tour allows a youngster to follow a Naturalist and help them complete their morning duties, which include feeding the animals, cleaning their tanks, and assisting them with other tasks around the Center. For more information or to register for a tour, call (904) 261-6161. The Amelia Island Nature Center is open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
