The Nassau Community Band began as the New Horizons Band, as part of the Amelia Arts Academy. When the Arts Academy closed, the band continued to get together for practice. The musicians then changed the name, and today the band features the talent of over 60 local artists. Some are amateurs, others have professional musical backgrounds. Carrie Mays, who plays clarinet with the band, used to teach the instrument at the Arts Academy. She also is part of the musical ministry at St. Michael’s church. “Many of our members used to play instruments in high school or in college, and wanted to start playing music again. Our musicians range in age from 16 to 70 years old.” The group practices at Yulee Middle School, under the direction of Amy Scott.
The Nassau Community Band will be hosting a Holiday Concert on Thursday, December 20 at 7 p.m., at Amelia Baptist Church, located near Harris Teeter. The concert is free, and a great family event. For more information contact: [email protected]
