Right Whale Celebration

Right Whale Celebration

On Saturday, November 24, artist Lauri Holton DeGaris will create a life size Right Whale shell mosaic on Fernandina’s Main Beach (north entrance). Each year, female Right Whales migrate to the waters off north Florida and south Georgia to give birth. To honor their arrival, Lauri is asking the community to help create a mosaic out of oysters shells collected from the beach. It will take thousands of oyster shells to complete a mother and calf mosaic for this year’s celebration.

Please, plan time to collect oyster shells between now and November 24th. Bring your oysters shells and your family to Main Beach, north entrance for a fun filled day of creation and celebration. The creation of the mosaic will begin at 10 a.m. and will continue until complete. At sunset, there will be a candle lighting ceremony honoring all whales. Get busy, go to the beach and collect oyster shells for this year’s Right Whale Celebration honoring our sisters in the sea!
