Lisa Waas is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher. “Iyengar Yoga is an art, a science, and a philosophy,” says Lisa. “It’s a practice to be taken seriously, one that builds strength and endurance, increases flexibility, reduces stress, and improves circulation, coordination, concentration, and balance.”
Seeing a need in the community for serious yoga practice, Lisa opened Community Yoga + Wellness in March, and she can’t imagine doing anything else. Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers undergo a 3-year training program, and there are only 1,200 teachers in the U.S. “When you come to my class, you will work hard,” says Lisa. “You will receive corrections and be given instructions to practice at home. I will teach you the philosophy, postures, and science behind Iyengar Yoga.”
Iyengar Yoga does not use music, since it is intended to heal the body and the mind with awareness and skillful action. Lisa teaches all Iyengar Yoga classes herself, and also offers classes in Tai Chi, Pilates, and other classical arts. “We use props to help beginner students find alignment in the pose or to challenge experienced students. We also offer healing classes for back, neck, shoulder, and knees,” says Lisa. “We have all the essential ingredients for an intelligent Iyengar Yoga practice, a mindful Vinyasa class, or a powerful Pilates session.
